Formative Assessments for STEM: KLEW

By December 11th, 2023No Comments

The KLEW formative assessment is a revamping of the old KWL chart, but it asks students to think more critically about the concepts they are learning.

First, students write down what they think they know (K).  Using this variation allows students to take a little more of a risk when sharing the concepts that they are learning.  Next, students write what they are learning (L), then support their statements with evidence (E).   Requiring students to support their claims makes students consider connections between the concepts they are learning.  Finally, students extend their thinking by writing what these connections make them wonder about (W).

As with any strategy or tool, we need to think carefully about the most appropriate one to use with our students that will help us to best reach our performance expectation.  Through thoughtful selection, we can effectively promote student learning.
